First cases of coronavirus in the Marshall Islands

Until August this year, the Republic of the Marshall Islands was considered free from coronavirus. And over the past day, the first six infected people were found in the country, the source of infection has not been determined.

The authorities of the island state in the Pacific Ocean detected an outbreak of COVID-19 for the first time in the entire period of the pandemic. Six infected were reported on August 9 Radio New Zealandreferring to the Ministry of Health.

The diagnosis was confirmed in one of the capital’s clinics Majuro. According to Jack Niedenthal, secretary of the department, doctors cannot yet determine the source of the infection. The borders of the Marshall Islands have remained closed to foreigners since March 2020, and all entering citizens are placed in mandatory quarantine. None of the infected people traveled abroad and did not come into contact with patients of the border detention facility.

The government has announced emergency measures to protect against the spread of COVID-19. The start of the school year in schools and universities has been postponed until October 10. President David Kabua urged citizens to wear protective masks. Citizens are advised to strictly observe the sanitary and hygienic rules. The President addressed the people of the country:

“We recommend that you remain calm and follow all medical protocols in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19.”

Approximately 55 thousand people live in the Marshall Islands, 75% of the population are vaccinated. Government agencies and businesses will continue to operate as usual for the time being. However, according to the decision of the authorities, communications between the remote islands of the archipelago will be suspended in order to limit the spread of coronavirus.
