Albanian protests: 7-year-old child killed by police officer

In Tirana, the building of the Ministry of Internal Affairs was doused with red paint on Monday night. Citizens are outraged by the death of a 7-year-old girl, protested and demanded justice.

According to the publication Euractiv, Jonada Avida died due to a collision with a watercraft. The boat was driven at high speed by a policeman who was not on duty at the time. Nevertheless, he had a service weapon, which was later discovered. The girl was swimming and died instantly, falling under the propeller of the boat.

The tragedy shook the country and caused numerous protests – both ordinary citizens and opposition parties. As it turned out during the investigation, the boat was driven by police officer Aryan Tase. In 2020, he managed to avoid malpractice charges in a drug growing case.

Citizens who came out to protest demanded the resignation of Tourism Minister Mirela Cumbaro and Interior Minister Bedar Kuchi, and the facade of the Foreign Ministry building was splashed with red paint. One of the leaders of the protest says:

“Kumbaro, as Minister of Tourism, must resign after the failure of tourism. You killed a seven-year-old girl who came to her homeland on vacation.”

The deceased baby lived in the UK and came to Albania for the summer. She is a British citizen, so the family hopes that the UK will also investigate.

A relative of the deceased girl, Iliryana Kuchan, called on Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama to respond to the demands of the protesters.

Arjan Tase has been charged with indirect homicide. While in a prison cell, he awaits trial. Earlier, the police ordered to stop the activities of the courts on the Albanian coast. However, business owners and administrators protested against this decision in Vlora. According to them, this destroys their business in the midst of the tourist season.
