"Shipwreck" on Zakynthos turned into a trash can

A photo of a pile of rubbish in Navagio, one of Greece’s most famous landmarks abroad, has gone viral on the internet.

The mayor of the island of Zakynthos, Nikitas Aretakis, did not stand aside, deciding to answer the “challenge”. The official responds GRTimes.grthat this is not the responsibility of the municipality, but of the Ministry of Tourism. “For the shipwreck (Navagio), there is a committee that the Ministry of Tourism has specifically appointed to regulate the correct and smooth operation of the tourist attraction. We (the municipal authorities) no longer have responsibility and authority for this part. In fact, we have no right to interfere in any matters related to Shipwreck Bay.

The photo was published by environmentalist Michalis Bakas, emphasizing his outrage at the “lost conscience” visitors, leaving the garbage right on the sand, and not putting it in the bins intended for this.

In addition, the head of the municipal council of Zakynthos, Stavros Kakoliris, told GRTimes.gr that guards are on duty at the site of the shipwreck every day, who monitor the tourist site. And the president of the Navagio Committee, Panayota Dionysopoulou, should have already been informed of the incident.

Fragment of the statement: “We, as a municipality, have no right to interfere in anything. There is a competent council responsible for the organization and daily cleaning of the beach. Commission President Panayiota Dionysopoulou put a guard on site, so the Ministry of Tourism should have been informed about the problem with the debris at the shipwreck. However, last year there were no such incidents, because the garbage was removed by our public utilities, who get to the place on boats because you can visit the tourist site only from the sea.”
