The presence of purple jellyfish in the Greek seas is of concern to bathers, although there are not many cases of stings. But care is needed in case a swimmer encounters them while swimming in the sea.
Doctor and swimmer Angelos Koutras spoke to ANT1 about his incident on Syros and pointed out what swimmers should be aware of and what to do if you are stung by a purple jellyfish.
The man describes how he felt tension in his left arm, as if an octopus had touched it. But then swelling developed, he felt unwell, unbearable pain and rushed to the hospital.
“During the swim, I felt a sharp burning pain in my left arm. It was as if the tentacles were hugging her, squeezing her like an octopus. I immediately turned towards the shore. During this time, a severe allergic reaction developed, my skin became numb, blisters formed, my left arm was swollen. I felt bad, my heart began to palpitate, I felt a sharp decline in strength. I thought I should go to the hospital. The pain was unbearable. And only when the doctors “took hold of me” did I calm down. They diagnosed neuralgia, and I already had convulsions. ”
The ANT1 channel concludes: if this happened to an absolutely healthy athlete, what would happen if in his place there was a fragile girl or an average citizen, most likely with some kind of chronic disease…
Be careful when swimming in the sea! And do not be so presumptuous that, they say, it will pass by itself. Seek medical attention if you have been stung by a purple jellyfish.
