"kiss of life": Pulitzer Prize Winning Photo

Professor Elias Mosialos posted a post on Facebook that he believes reveals the meaning of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Kiss of Life photo.

The post was made by Mr. Mosialos, professor of health policy at the London School of Economics, which was not about health issues, but about the history of a famous photograph. It explains the significance of the Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph of two men kissing.

“Kiss of life” (The kiss of life). This is the title of a photograph of two men kissing. One day in July 1967, photographer Rocco Morabito was driving down West 26th Street in Jacksonville, Fla., and stopped to take a few shots of Jacksonville electrical workers doing maintenance work.

As he approached, he heard screams. As it turned out, Randall G. Champion, who was working on top of a power pole, accidentally touched one of the lines. He lost consciousness when an electric current ran through his body, and only the seat belt prevented him from falling. The man urgently needed to be rescued, if you do not provide him with first aid immediately, he will die.

His colleague, worker J.D. Thompson, descended from another power pole, located tens of meters from the scene, and in a matter of seconds reached the shocked Randall. The man needed artificial respiration. But since he was hanging upside down, it was technically impossible to do so. He knew instinctively that he didn’t have time to loosen the straps and lower the boy to the ground. In order to keep him from dying, Thompson decided that the only way out at that moment was to try to “breathe” for him (mouth-to-mouth artificial respiration).

Thanks to Thompson’s vigilance, Randall was saved and lived another 35 years, dying in 2002 at the age of 64. Photographer Morabito stopped just to take pictures of the workers. But hearing screams, approached the scene and called an ambulance. It was while he was observing the situation that he took this photo of Thompson “kissing” Randall. The kiss that actually saved his life.
