The volume of Russian gas supplied to Germany began to fall

Gas supplies to Germany via Nord Stream 1 have been reduced by up to 20%, German authorities report. Further decline is expected.

Earlier, Gazprom announced a reduction in supplies to 20% due to repair work. Since the beginning of June, gas supplies via Nord Stream have dropped by 80%. Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for the Russian president, explained that Gazprom was unable to supply more gas due to the need to repair equipment.

The failure to fulfill the agreement on gas supplies to Germany through Nord Stream 1 was announced by the German government, accusing Moscow of gas blackmail. In Russia, they reported a preventive reduction in pumping from 40 to 20% of the throughput capacity of the highway. The daily throughput of the pipeline dropped to 33 million cubic meters of gas.

Gazprom claims that problems with the equipment at the compressor station are to blame – another turbine is out of order and needs to be repaired. In Berlin, they noted earlier that they see no technical grounds for reducing the volume of fuel supplied through the pipeline:

The turbine was repaired, it is in place. Our Canadian partners agreed to the delivery, for which we are very grateful. Therefore, from our point of view, nothing prevents her from being transported to Russia. We are watching a show of strength, Moscow is flexing its muscles, but we will not be intimidated.

The German agency DPA reported, citing Eustream, that Russia intends to simultaneously increase supplies via the Transgaz highway through Slovakia and Ukraine. In Kyiv, they said that Gazprom unexpectedly increased pressure on the border section of the Urengoy-Pomary-Uzhgorod gas pipeline.

Europe is confident that Moscow is once again using gas as a weapon in response to EU support for Ukraine. Christian Egenhoger of the Center for European Policy Studies says:

“President Putin is trying to test the resolve EU, its unity. And he will play by giving a little gas to some and not giving to others, and just see if he can keep the unity. So far, governments have been very firm. But, of course, the support of the population, industry, etc. threatened, and that’s what he plays.”

Against the background of announcements by the Russian concern, gas prices jumped by 12% and exceeded $2,000 per thousand cubic meters at auction in London.

On the eve of the EU states agreed on an emergency plan to reduce gas consumption by 15% from August 1 to March 31, to prevent a winter energy crisis. The agreement provides for exceptions for several countries. At the same time, EU members themselves will be able to choose how to achieve the necessary reduction.
