The Crown Prince came to Greece with a project to reduce the cost of electricity, to create a relationship between the two countries in the field of telecommunications.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis welcomed Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at the Megaro Maximos Palace.
The presence of the Saudi tycoon in Greece is considered key to foreign investment in our country, as the funds that are supposed to be spent in various sectors of the economy are legendary. Mohammed bin Salman, in his speech at the Maximos reception, revealed much of his investment agenda and plans, stating that, among other things, Saudi Arabia wants to turn Greece into a hydrogen hub in Europe.
The following is the dialogue between the Prime Minister and the Crown Prince immediately after the reception at the Prime Minister’s residence:
Kyriakos Mitsotakis: Your Highness, it is my sincere pleasure to welcome you to Athens on your first trip to Europe since the Covid-19 pandemic. This is an opportunity to confirm the strength of our strategic relationship. We will sign important agreements and we will have the opportunity to discuss regional developments, as well as ways to further strengthen important relations between our countries, with a particular focus on economic cooperation.
I would like to once again congratulate you on the Vision 2030 project and the ambition that pervades it. And we would like to consider additional opportunities for cooperation between our countries in the economy and attract more Saudi investment to Greece.
Therefore, I am very pleased to welcome you to Athens and to the office of the Prime Minister.
Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud: Thank you Mr Prime Minister. I am very happy to be in Athens and sincerely thank you for the warm welcome, which means a lot to me and to Saudi Arabia.
The relationship between our two countries is historic, and I believe we also have historic opportunities, many of which we are about to realize today. By connecting the grids, we will be able to provide Greece and southeastern Europe via Greece with much cheaper renewable energy, and today we will sign a memorandum of understanding on this matter.
We are also concerned about hydrogen and how to make Greece the center of Europe in terms of hydrogen, this is a game changer for both countries. We are also working on connecting the telecommunications network.
These three important questions will change the position of Greece and Saudi Arabia, and support Europe, especially the south and west, with much cheaper and more efficient energy from renewable sources. We have a fourth big issue that we can announce today, we can do it later, we are working on it.
And we certainly have a rich agenda: investment, trade, economic agenda, political agenda, security. Therefore, I promise you that when I return to Greece, I will not come empty-handed. We have many issues that will change the situation both for our countries and for the entire region. Thank you Mr Prime Minister.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis: Thank you, Your Highness.
