Early Wednesday morning in the village of Christoupoli Spaton, next to Panorama Pallini, as houses burn in the area and firefighters try to bring the fire under control.
The man in black quickly crosses the street, crouches and hides behind a tree, then hurries away. A fire then breaks out at the site, without him knowing that the neighbors are watching him.
“The man was spotted by two neighbors who were awake after reports of a large fire in Penteli came in. “He stopped the car, got out and opened the trunk. I was intrigued. We looked carefully. The fire burned from above, reached the Panorama. I see him walking. For a moment I lose it. Then I see how he leaves, and after a few seconds, a flame breaks out at the place where he was before, ”the eyewitness said.
“I saw him crossing the street, I thought it must have been someone who left the fire area. I was surprised by his movements, it seemed that he was looking for something near the tree. And suddenly, when he starts to run away, I see a flame, a fire…,” said another eyewitness. “I saw what he was doing and I thought I would go up to him. But when I saw the flames, I immediately grabbed a fire extinguisher and ran to put out the fire. The wind was blowing so hard, with gusts, that in a matter of seconds the fire spread in Panorama for two kilometers, ”said a resident who came out with a fire extinguisher and put out the fire.
Arson not ruled out in Pendeli
“We cannot rule anything out, we will have more information when the fire department completes its investigative work,” said Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, when asked about it after a briefing at the fire service’s coordination center, where he went again late in the evening in Wednesday.
Christos Stylianides also did not rule out the possibility of arson. According to what he said at an emergency briefing on the causes of the fire in Penteli, the possibility that it was caused by a short circuit or a lightning strike is ruled out. “All other possibilities are open,” he said.
Fire investigation
It is worth noting that the head of the Athenian Prosecutor’s Office, Maria Gane, ordered an urgent preliminary investigation into the fires that broke out over the past few hours in Penteli, Anthous, Gerak, Pallini, Drafi and Megara.
Ms. Gane, on the orders of Sotiria Papageorgakopoulou, the head of the Prosecutor’s Office of First Instance of Athens, demanded a prosecutor’s investigation in order to search for any criminal activity in any direction. Among the offenses that will be investigated are arson, forest fires, violation of environmental laws, etc.
As part of the investigation, which is expected to be handed over to the prosecutor in the coming hours, any evidence, information and lawsuits will be used to find the causes that caused specific fires, which also caused huge environmental damage and heavy loss of property of citizens.
