Airports: Tourist arrivals have broken the 2019 ‘barrier’.

The number of tourist arrivals from abroad at Greek airports surpassed the record level of 2019 compared to the corresponding month three years ago, and at a six-month level so far stands at 90.6% from the same year with the highest traffic at Greek airports, according to the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (UGA).

In particular, from the preliminary statistics of the UGA on the passenger traffic of airports for June 2022, it follows:

• The total number of passengers carried reached 8,398,777, an increase of 167.6% compared to the corresponding period in 2021, when 3,138,908 passengers were carried.
• The number of flights at all airports in the country amounted to 67,428, of which 22,212 are domestic and 45,216 are international, which is 64% more than in the corresponding period of June 2021, when 41,107 flights were operated.
• Arrivals of foreign passengers in June 2022 increased by 190.5%, which corresponds to 3,480,812 passengers, compared to the corresponding month in 2021, when arrivals from abroad amounted to 1,198,398 passengers.

Comparison with 2019

• If we compare the preliminary statistics for June 2022 with the corresponding month of 2019, when 66,827 flights were operated, then this year the volume of air traffic increased by 0.9%.
• In the total passenger traffic (departure and arrival), which amounted to 8,427,908 people in 2019, for the same period in 2022, which amounted to 8,398,777 people, there is a decrease of 0.3%.
• With regard specifically to the arrivals of passengers of foreign flights, in 2019 it was 3,477,906 people, for the same period in 2022 – 3,480,812 people, an increase of 0.1%.

Data for 1st and 2nd quarters

According to the same CGA figures for airport passenger traffic, for the 1st and 2nd quarters of 2022, the following results were obtained:

• The total number of passengers carried reached 22,407,879, an increase of 269.1% compared to the corresponding period in 2021, when 6,071,559 passengers were carried.
• As for flights at the country’s airports, they amounted to 207,289, of which 90,564 are domestic and 116,725 are international, which is 95.7% more than in the corresponding period of 2021, when 105,930 flights were operated.
• Finally, comparing January/June 2019 statistics, when 214,489 flights were operated, there was a 3.4% drop in aircraft traffic in the first half of this year. In the total passenger traffic, which in January-June 2019 amounted to 24,726,456 people, for the same period under review in 2022, there was a drop of 9.4%.

According to the data above, the total passenger traffic in the first half of 2022 reached 90.6% of the passenger traffic in the first half of 2019.
