Invasion "centaur" expected in Greece

In August, the appearance of the “Centaur” is expected in Greece, but not the one that, perhaps, someone with “mystical thinking” might think of, the hero of mythology.

Alas, epidemiological scientists are urging the population to be fully armed in order to resist a new strain of coronavirus, which for some reason was called “Centaur”. Leading figures in science and health are watching with concern as the “map” of covid mutations expands and affects the course of the pandemic.

The latest sub-variant of the Omicron mutation, the Centaurus strain (Centaurus, or BA.2.75 as it is scientifically known), is being found in a growing number of countries (after India), where it was first reported last May. protothema.gr. It is assumed that in August “Centaur” will also appear in Greece. Experts do not exclude its detection even earlier, due to the tourist season and the high mobility of travelers.

There is not enough data on this subvariant for scientists to have a clear idea of its course and dynamics. The scenario of dominance of BA.2.75 over currently available covid sub-variants BA.4 and BA.5 is unknown (and uncertainty will remain in the next few weeks).

It will likely take at least 5 weeks to judge how much the new sub-variant is more infectious than the current one and how it will cause a new outbreak of the epidemic. At present, the epidemic wave tends to stabilize, despite the fact that tens of thousands of sick people are still observed with their re-infection.

Fortunately, there are only a few hundred hospitalized in Greece with severe COVID-19. Over the past week, a large number of hospitalizations of patients with COVID-19 have been registered. Last Wednesday, even a sad “record” was set for the last quarter with 447 new hospitalizations.

Currently, the number of hospitalized patients exceeded 2200 people, of which almost 500 needed enhanced care in special departments (ICU, MAF, MEL, etc.). The number of intubated has increased over the past 10 days, reaching 110.

However, as physicians emphasize, the procedure intubation is generally not given to vaccinated people (because they don’t need it).

The unvaccinated remain at a great risk of suffering severe covid. According to the National Public Health Organization (EODY) available to TEMA, in In intensive care units, the vast majority of intubated patients are those who have not been vaccinated.
