The latest sub-variant of the Omicron mutation, the Centaurus strain (Centaurus, or BA.2.75 as it is scientifically known), is being found in a growing number of countries (after India), where it was first reported last May. protothema.gr. It is assumed that in August “Centaur” will also appear in Greece. Experts do not exclude its detection even earlier, due to the tourist season and the high mobility of travelers.

There is not enough data on this subvariant for scientists to have a clear idea of ​​its course and dynamics. The scenario of dominance of BA.2.75 over currently available covid sub-variants BA.4 and BA.5 is unknown (and uncertainty will remain in the next few weeks).

It will likely take at least 5 weeks to judge how much the new sub-variant is more infectious than the current one and how it will cause a new outbreak of the epidemic. At present, the epidemic wave tends to stabilize, despite the fact that tens of thousands of sick people are still observed with their re-infection.

Fortunately, there are only a few hundred hospitalized in Greece with severe COVID-19. Over the past week, a large number of hospitalizations of patients with COVID-19 have been registered. Last Wednesday, even a sad “record” was set for the last quarter with 447 new hospitalizations.
