A private helicopter fell from a low altitude during takeoff at the capital’s El airport. Venizelos. The helicopter caught fire after the fall, but the pilot managed to escape.
The helicopter was based at Athens Eleftherios Venizelos Airport in the general aviation sector, where private flights are operated. It is owned by a private company and only the pilot was on board, heading to his destination to pick up passengers.
It is unknown what exactly happened, the helicopter had only risen about 2-3 meters above the ground when it had a mechanical failure and crashed. Once on the ground, the helicopter broke into two parts and caught fire. The pilot managed to free himself from the cockpit and leave the helicopter.
The response of the Eleftherios Venizelos airport fire department was immediate and firefighters quickly extinguished the fire.
