How "works" digital work card: mass complaints and statement of the Athens Association of Trade Workers

The government’s innovation, the digital work card, discredited itself in its first days of use. The number of complaints is skyrocketing.

“The social justice narrative didn’t last a few hours in the labor arena,” the Athens Trade Workers’ Association says of employees being forced to “punch” their digital work card and continue to work overtime, writes newsbeast.gr.

The premiere of the innovation of the government took place only a few days ago, on the first of July. However, the map shows fictitious leaving work, in fact, employees continue to work. And this is not an isolated case, but a mass phenomenon, as workers’ complaints testify.

Exactly one year ago, our publication, according to an information note from the Ministry of Labor and the Ministry of Digital Government, wrote that electronic work card:

• An innovative tool to control unclaimed work.
• Guarantee that employees work time and pay overtime in accordance with the rules.
• Helps to avoid unfair competition from law-abiding companies from those who practice “unannounced” or “open” practices.
• Makes labor inspection inspections transparent and objective, is the “key” to the fair implementation of reforms such as the right to disconnect from remote work, the regulation of working hours, the equalization of overtime in industry and the service sector.

The use of a digital map is a constant request of the GSEE, which is being granted today. The investment in the digital card in its full form will be included to fund the recovery fund to be implemented as soon as possible. Its implementation will be initiated by large companies that already use employee timekeeping systems, usually electronically, and will gradually expand across the market.

And now the digital card has been introduced… The complaint of the Athens Association of Trade Workers refers to “workers who were forced to punch their card at 06:00 instead of 05:00 in order not to show one hour of night work” and about “a reminder to hourly workers who must were to work 8 hours, do not forget to “break through” your card after 4 hours of work”, cutting the official working day in half.

However, on the eve of the introduction of the card, the Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, Mr. Kostis Hatzidakis declaredthat the digital work card “makes a big difference in solving the problem of undeclared work” and that it is “a step towards social justice not in words but in practice”. The measure will start with banks, and then spread to workers in supermarkets, then catering and tourism. Shall we take his word for it? But the reality, alas, is not compatible with his assurances. At least for now…

Statement of the Athens Association of Trade Workers:

“On the occasion of the official introduction of the digital work book from July 1, the Minister of Labor decided to visit some enterprises in a well-organized environment to tell us that “8 hours cannot be declared as 4 hours, that the requirement of ΓΣΕΕ is fulfilled by putting social policy into practice.”

In the statement of the press service of the Ministry of Labor, we read, among other things, about a “revolution in the labor market”, about a “reform with a strong social dimension”, about “guaranteeing and respecting working hours and overtime hours of an employee”. To top it all off, the Secretary General for Labor Relations, who called it a “flagship reform”, said that “perhaps the most important weapon against crime is being built, which will decisively help the Labor Inspectorate in its work.” They even brought in advertising campaigns to convince us of the benefits of a digital labor card.

And all this is said by those who abolished the 8-hour working day, legislated the 10-hour and intermittent working day, unpaid overtime, dismantled the working hours, extended the abolition of Sunday holidays to other industries not related to trade, degraded and devalued the labor inspectorate . It was they who, following the example of all previous governments, struck a blow to labor rights and achievements, making every requirement of the employer a law.

It is on this soil, in this medieval working environment where employer impunity has reached a new level, that the digital labor card is being introduced, and the only thing we can be sure of is that the attack on our rights will continue and intensify.

The social justice narrative did not last even a few hours in the s/m labor arena. Workers caught at 5:00 am were instructed to punch the card at 6:00 am to avoid showing one hour of night work. Supervisors asked the cashiers to “break through” their card at exactly 21:00, while at their post and serving customers. Reminder for hourly employees working 8-hour shifts to remember to “swipe” their card during a 4-hour shift, electronic order takers to “swipe” their card whether they have finished their order or not and continue after that, drivers – not swipe your card at all as they are out of the store and work on your day off, but with instructions not to ‘swipe’ your card.

These are just a few examples of what happened on the first day of the introduction of digital labor cards in s/m networks, and they certainly will not become news in any online media, newspaper or channel. But they are yet another proof that we will not see a bright day from those, present and past, who put their stamp of approval on this blackness, this licentiousness.

In organization there is strength, in struggle there is hope! One of the ways for us is to organize in a trade union, to participate in the struggle for the protection of our rights, to have gains. It is time to fight back and demand the signing of collective labor agreements with substantial increases in our wages, reduced working hours, fixed hours and schedules, and not in the way that is convenient for the employer, paying our overtime, keeping Sunday rest.

Ψηφιακή κάρτα

Η ανακοίνωση του Συλλόγου Εμποροϋπαλλήλων Αθήνας έχει ως εξής:

«Με αφορμή την επίσημη πρώτη της ψηφιακής κάρτας εργασίας από 1 Ιουλίου ο υπουργός εργασίας που εδώ και 2,5 χρόνια που μετράμε δεκάδες νεκρούς συναδέλφους μας και εκατοντάδες κρούσματα από τα πρωτόκολλα λάστιχο δεν πέρναγε ούτε έξω από supermarkets, αποφάσισε να επισκεφτεί κάποια σε ένα καλά στημένο σκηνικό για να μας πει ότι ”τα 8ωρα δεν θα μπορούν να δηλώνονται ως 4ωρα, ότι υλοποιείται ένα αίτημα της ΓΣΕΕ, εφαρμόζοντας μια κοινωνική πολιτική στην πράξη”.

Σε ανακοίνωση του γραφείου τύπου του υπουργείου εργασίας διαβάζουμε μεταξύ άλλων για “επανάσταση στην αγορά εργασίας”, για ”μεταρρύθμιση με έντονο κοινωνικό πρόσημο”, για ”εγγύηση και σεβασμό του ωραρίου και των υπερωριών του εργαζομένου”. Για να το απογειώσει η Γενική Γραμματέας Εργασιακών Σχέσεων, η οποία έκανε λόγο για ”ναυαρχίδα των μεταρρυθμίσεων”, ότι ”θεμελιώνεται, ίσως, το σημαντικότερο όπλο απέναντι στην παραβατικότητα, το οποίο θα βοηθήσει την Επιθεώρηση Εργασίας στο έργο της αποφασιστικά”. Αυτά είναι μερικά παραδείγματα για το τι έγινε την πρώτη μέρα εφαρμογής της ψηφιακής κάρτας εργασίας στις αλυσίδες των s/m και σίγουρα δεν θα αποτελέσουν είδηση ​​σε κανένα διαδικτυακό μέσο, ​​εφημερίδα ή κανάλι. Αποτελούν όμως άλλη μια απόδειξη ότι δεν πρόκειται να δούμε άσπρη μέρα από αυτούς, τωρινούς και προηγούμενους που έχουν βάλει τη σφραγίδα τους σε αυτή τη μαυρίλα, σε αυτή την ασυδοσία.
