EU fines for illegal landfills in Greece continue to pile up

Greece has paid the European Commission about 66.5 million euros in fines since 2015, but the country faces even more fines for failing to close or develop several illegal dumps.

After famous actor Leonardo DiCaprio posted a videodemonstrating garbage dump on the seabed near this island, the mayor began to make excuses in a panic. The scandal contributed to the fact that there were eco-enthusiasts who took up cleaning underwater landfill.

According to a recent report, there are still three illegal landfills in Greece – on the islands of Santorini, Hydra and Kalymnos – and 16 closed, but not developed, which pose a risk to public health and the environment.

There are also 11 other places where landfills were closed and developed after the closure, but, according to data from the European Commission, continue to operate illegally.

The Ministry of the Environment says that, according to the plan, by 2024 the country will fully comply with the rules of the European Union for waste management.

Illegal landfills on the islands are a source of environmental danger. It is worth noting that on some islands, for example, on Andros, the landfill that existed for many years was washed away during a strong storm accompanied by a downpour into the sea and has been a significant problem for the ecology of the region for several years now.
