Venice has announced "entrance fee"

Venice in Italy will be the first city in the world to charge its guests. The city council announced the change.

From January 2023, every tourist wishing to visit Venice will have to pay 3-10 euros – the cost will vary depending on the time of year, reports “European Truth”. Last Thursday, such a decision was made by the City Council, it will come into force on January 16, 2023.

Confirmation of payment, each tourist will have to present at the request of special authorized inspectors who will appear on the city streets. In the absence of a receipt, you will have to pay a fine. An exception is expected for tourists arriving just for one night, as well as city residents and their guests. The Venice City Council notes:

“The aim of the initiative is to discourage one-day tourism at certain times of the year and to encourage multi-day tourism.”

Last year, the Italian authorities banned large cruise ships from the Venetian Lagoon, in a bid to protect the place from an influx of tourists. Such measures can be the first steps in the process of restoration and regulation of mass tourism.
