Tsipras on NATO summit: ‘A terrible diplomatic defeat for Greece’

The outcome of the NATO summit in Madrid is “a diplomatic Waterloo for Greek positions,” SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance leader Alexis Tsipras said on Thursday.

In conversation with OPEN TV Tsipras said: “We understood what happened in Madrid yesterday (Wednesday), but the Greek government says it is satisfied.”

“The government has set a low bar for Turkey and seems satisfied that Turkey has not raised the issue of the sovereignty of the Greek islands in NATO,” the leader of the main opposition party said.

According to him, SYRIZA is concerned about “reaffirmation of Western support for Turkey, despite the fact that it expresses an extreme revisionist policy.

He stressed that Greece “suffered a terrible diplomatic defeat” in Madrid and accused the government of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis of “pursuing a dangerous foreign policy that takes us from defeat to defeat. And every time he pulls new weapons programs out of his sleeve.”

Tsipras added that although SYRIZA has supported the purchase of Belharra frigates and the modernization of F-16s, it is always necessary to check the financial capacity of the country for purchases of these programs.

PS. Greek government downgrades Erdogan’s US dealF-16s against Sweden and Finland in NATO”, stating only that the Turkish president did a somersault and is pleased that he did not raise the issue of the Greek islands at the summit.
