Due to the expulsion of eight of its diplomats from representative offices in the Russian Federation, the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs made a demarche to the Russian Ambassador in Athens.
General Secretary Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairsas stated in a statement by the press service of the department, stressed:
“The Russian reaction was disproportionate compared to the measures announced by our country against certain Russian diplomats, who were declared undesirable, as they demonstrated actions inconsistent with their diplomatic status, in accordance with the provisions of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961 and the Vienna Convention on consular relations of 1963. On the contrary, the expulsion of Greek diplomats has no justification other than disproportionate retribution. It was also stressed that the aforementioned Greek diplomats had in no way violated the Vienna Conventions. A protest was also expressed by the Greek side “regarding the content of the latest statements by Russian officials and it was emphasized that generalizations and formulation of accusations against our country that cannot be confirmed should be avoided.”
On June 27, a message appeared on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation that 8 Greek diplomats declared “undesirable persons”:
“On June 27, the Ambassador of the Hellenic Republic to the Russian Federation, E. Nassika, was summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry, who expressed a strong protest in connection with the confrontational course of the Greek authorities towards Russia, including the supply of weapons and military equipment to the Kyiv regime and the announcement of a group of Russian diplomats in Greece” persona non grata”. The ambassador was handed a note with a notification that, as a response, eight Greek diplomatic employees in Russia were declared “persona non grata” and they must leave the country within eight days. Information was provided on other steps taken by the Russian side, related to the functioning of the Greek missions abroad in Russia”.
This was a response to the “confrontational course of the country’s authorities towards Russia” and the April 6 announcement of the expulsion of 12 Russian diplomats from Greece, including high-ranking officials of the embassy in Athens and the consulate general in Thessaloniki. In response, the website of the Greek Foreign Ministry appeared message:
“We express our deep regret over the decision of the Russian authorities to declare eight employees of the Greek Embassy in Moscow, as well as the Consulate General in Moscow, persona non grata.”
