RND: “Dear Greece: the locals are not up to the holidays”

“Dear Greece: the locals are out of time for the holidays,” is the headline of the RND (Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland) news network, which was published in several German newspapers.

The publication begins with an example: “With a net monthly income of 1,800 euros, the family of Eleni and Georgios Kontogiorgis belongs to the middle class in Greece. The 30-year-old head of the family is a police officer, his 31-year-old wife works part-time in a kindergarten, where the couple’s daughters of three and five years also go.

Dubai is cheaper than the Cyclades

Usually the family went on vacation in August to Paros for 14 days, as in the previous three years. “But this year we canceled the trip,” says Eleni. Their hotel has increased prices by 25% compared to last year.

Instead of Paros, “we booked a hotel in Dubai for 95 euros per night. For a family of four, an air ticket will cost about 2,000 euros.” But, as George Kontogiorgis says, “in general, holidays in the Emirates will be cheaper than in the Cyclades.”

The sharp rise in hotel prices

Regarding Athens, the publication notes that “according to the online platform Mabrian, prices for five-star hotels in Greece have increased by 110% this year compared to 2019, before the crisis. For four-star hotels, the growth was 63%, for three-star hotels – 19%. In May, inflation in Greece reached 11.3%, the highest rate in 30 years.

Everything has risen in price, from the hotel to the food at the tavern and drinks at the beach bar or car rental. Added to this are the high prices of gasoline. On the Greek islands, at many gas stations, a liter of gasoline costs more than 2.70 euros.
