New artifacts discovered at the site of an ancient shipwreck off the Greek island of Antikythera, writes GreekReporterreferring to RIA Novosti and the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports.
Among them is an unusual marble head of a man. Scientists suggest that this is part of the statue of Hercules of Farnese. The body itself was found in 1900, the statue is kept in the Greek National Archaeological Museum.
During the survey of the shipwreck, numerous ship accessories were also found covered with a thick layer of marine sediments. Scientists hope that they will be able to establish their identity using modern methods of studying the finds. Two human teeth were also found. According to them, it will be possible to establish the genetic characteristics of the person to whom they belonged.
The site of an ancient shipwreck off the island of Antikythera, discovered in 1900, is real treasure for archaeologists. They are sure that on board the sunken ship there was cargo for a wealthy Roman who collected Greek works of art. In the area of Antikythera, a mechanism was also found, which is called in the scientific world the first computer in history.
