A new, second increase in prices for passenger ferry tickets in 2022 was officially announced by the competent services.
This is because the ever-increasing cost of fuel has increased the cost of operating ships by up to 70%. A passenger ferry on the Piraeus-Chania line needs about 33 tons of fuel per day, according to coastal shipping executives.
Today’s low-sulphur VLSFO fuel used on ships without scrubbers has reached $1,264 per ton, up from $480 last year. Thus, a vessel on this line will need 41,250 euros for fuel on each route, compared to 15,840 euros needed about a year ago.
The new increase in ticket prices is averaging between 5% and 10%, while noting that the previous increase was made in April 2022 and averaged between 10% and 12%. News agency information ΑΠΕ-ΜΠΕ says that for some destinations and routes, a new slight increase from July 1 is not ruled out.
“We said that 2022 would be the first year of a return to normal life, but then there were Russian-Ukrainian events, due to which the cost of energy carriers increased dramatically, in just a few months,” said a representative of the shipping market.
On the Rafina-Mykonos line, the price of an individual ticket from 35 euros has now reached 38 euros, an increase of 8.57%, while on the Rafina-Tinos line, a ticket now costs 35 euros (the price has increased by 9.38%, from 32 e). Also on the Rafina-Andros line, the ticket price increased from 23 euros to 25 euros, which is 8.70% more.
From Piraeus to Naxos, the cost of a ticket from 45.50 euros to 48 euros, an increase of 5.49%, and for speed boats (for the same route) from 63.70 euros to 67.40 euros. On the Piraeus-Rhodes line, the ticket price changed from 82.50 euros to 86.50 euros (an increase of 4.85%).
On the Piraeus-Patmos line, the price of a ticket from 50 euros has reached 52.50 euros, which is 4% more, and on the Piraeus-Paros line, from 44.50 euros to 46.50 euros. On the Piraeus-Milos line, an individual ticket instead of 43 euros will now cost 45.50 euros.
On the Piraeus-Rhodes line, the total cost of a trip for four people with a car will amount to 489.50 euros (from 466.50 euros, an increase of 4.93%).
