The United Nations announced the impossibility of adoption in Russia of children taken out of Ukraine.
UNICEF, an international organization operating under the auspices of the United Nations, recalls that the decision to adopt should be made in the best interests of the child and only with his voluntary consent. BB.LV.
Afshan Khan, UNICEF Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia and Special Coordinator in Europe for the Refugee and Migrant Crisis, said on Tuesday that children taken into Ukraine due to the Russian invasion should not be adopted by Russian families:
“We reiterate, including to the Russian Federation, that adoption should not take place during emergencies or immediately after them.”
Ms. Khan recalled that the transfer of children should be carried out only in their interests and with the voluntary consent of the parents. If children are taken to another country without meeting these conditions, they cannot be considered orphans:
“With regard to children sent to Russia, we are working closely with authorized representatives for their rights and international organizations to best document such cases.”
