Skirmish between Greek MPs and Turkish defense minister at NATO meeting

The conflict that broke out between the Turkish defense minister and the Greek deputies led to the fact that the minister left the NATO meeting in a rage.

A serious diplomatic incident occurred on Tuesday during a meeting of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly Committee in Istanbul.

“Demilitarize the islands,” the Turkish defense minister demanded. “You have no right to demand this,” the Greek deputies replied, demanding the abolition of the casus belli.

Addressing the meeting participants, Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar once again raised the issue of territorial waters and the demilitarization of the Aegean islands, and accused Greece of supporting terrorism. The Turkish minister tried to make accusations of supporting terrorists from Greece, claiming a certain Kurdish training camp in Lavrio. He also stated that the Greek Air Force violated Turkish airspace by flying over Didim and Datchey on the west coast of the country.

The head of the Greek delegation, the ruling MP from the New Democracy, Spilios Libanos, replied to Akar that “Greece respects the principles of the rule of law, fights terrorism and seeks dialogue.”Speaking in a harsh tone, he asked how Turkey, on the one hand, refers to the NATO alliance, and on the other, to casus beli, while emphasizing that the neighboring country speaks of state sovereignty while it is the one who invaded Cyprus .

The Greek deputies also referred to the continuous overflights of Turkish fighters over the Aegean Sea and to “aggressive revisionist rhetoric from Turkey.”

Akar responded in Turkish and left the room in anger as deputies Theodora Tsakri (SYRIZA) and Andreas Loverdos (PASOK_KINAL) were about to take the floor. The Greek media welcomed the incident, calling it “Akar’s slap in the face”, but this incident further escalates the conflict between the countries, which sooner or later may turn into a war.
