“Monkeypox” will be renamed so that the monkeys will not be offended.

The current name smacks of discrimination and racism, which is why the head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Ghebreyesus, told reporters on Tuesday that his agency is already working on renaming the virus.

And a WHO spokesman in correspondence with TIME magazine noted that, “by assigning names to certain diseases, one should avoid possible offensive connotations regarding cultural, social, national, regional, professional and ethnic groups.”
