Cars in Thessaloniki yesterday "swam"

A two-hour downpour that hit Thessaloniki yesterday flooded a regional road tunnel and turned vehicles into boats.

The northern capital of Greece literally “drowned” as a result of a sudden rain. Reportedly thestival.gr, a huge traffic jam formed in the area of ​​the tunnel, and the cars “swimmed” the dangerous section.

The fire department received continuous calls, more than 220 of them related to pumping water and evacuating people to a safe place. The aggression of nature lasted two hours, from 16:00 to 18:00. Some roads have turned into raging rivers.

According to the police department, due to the accumulation of water in the area of ​​​​Makriyannis Street, traffic was closed there, cars were directed to a detour. Water also accumulated under the bridge of Agios Panton Street.

Charalambos Stergiadis, head of the Department of Civil Protection of the Central Macedonia region, told the Athens News Agency that seven pumping and earthmoving machines are “operating at such requested points as the Kavalari district of the municipality of Lagada and the areas of the municipalities of Ampelokipon Menemeni and Pavlou Mela. Also on the bridge Agios Panton has requested a machine to assist in the pumping of the water.”
