Annual consumer inflation in Greece jumped to its highest level in 29 years at 11.3% in May as prices for energy, housing, transportation and food rose, official data showed on Thursday.
Inflation accelerated from 10.2% in April, statistics service reports ELSTAT. On a monthly basis, consumer inflation rose by 0.7%.
Annual inflation in Greece, harmonized with EUalso rose sharply to 10.5% in May from 9.1% in April, further reducing disposable income. EU harmonized inflation is an index of the components used in the EU to measure inflation consistently.
According to ELSTAT, natural gas prices rose by 172.7% year on year, electricity by 80.2%, and fuel oil prices increased by 65.1%.
The data showed housing costs rose 35.0% year-on-year, while transportation prices rose 18.8%, food and non-alcoholic beverages rose 12.1%, and electricity rose almost 250%. .
