Five traffickers have been arrested in the past two days, and at least 20 migrants have been prevented from entering the country in the Evros region on the Greek-Turkish border, the police departments of Alexandroupoli and Orestiada in northern Greece said on Wednesday.
The arrests were carried out on two separate occasions: the first three traffickers (as the Greek Criminal Code defines smugglers of illegal migrants) were arrested on the national highway near Alexandroupoli while transporting three migrants who entered Greece illegally in their car.
In the second case, the border police arrested two more traffickers near the Evros River who were transporting three migrants on their boats who did not have the necessary travel documents.
The police said the incident prevented the illegal entry of 20 more migrants who were on standby to cross into Greece from the Turkish side.
Of the traffickers, one is a Greek citizen, the rest are foreigners.
