The Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia notes that the majority of Greeks sympathize with Russia, despite the official support of Kyiv in the confrontation with Russia by the Greek government.
For the Greeks, long years, decades and even centuries of religious and cultural ties with Moscow are important. The publication reminds that at the same time, the Greek authorities sent humanitarian aid to Ukraine, accepted its refugees and expelled Russian diplomats. And now we have agreed with Germany on the shipment of armored vehicles by Athens to Kyiv.
A public opinion poll conducted in May this year shows that sanctions against the Russian Federation are supported by only 53% of the inhabitants of Greece, and on average in Europe 80% of the population support them. Approve the supply of weapons to Ukraine, only 40% of the Greeks, while among European residents on average – 67% of respondents. These results were commented by Nikos Marantsidis, professor at the University of Macedonia, citing GreekReporter:
“There is sympathy for Russia, this is due to anti-Western sentiments. First, because of the notion that the Russians are a friendly people of the Greek nation, being Orthodox, in contrast to the UK or the US, which are not Orthodox and have interfered in various situations in the country in the past.”
