In connection with the request of the Turkish Foreign Minister, the United Nations changed the spelling of the name of the state in foreign languages - instead of Turkey, it became Türkiye.
The change was announced by the press secretary of the UN Secretary-General Stefan Dujarric, the Turkish agency writes. Anadolu (AA). The official representative of the organization’s secretary general said that they received a letter from Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu addressed to Secretary General António Guterres, which contained a request to change the name of the state in foreign languages to “Türkiye”. Dujarric noted that the change takes effect from the moment the letter is received. Cavusoglu tweeted:
“The process we started under the leadership of our President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to enhance the brand value of our country is coming to an end. By the letter I sent today to the UN Secretary General, we register the name of our country in foreign languages with the UN as “Türkiye”.
Now in all international documents it will be necessary to indicate the new name of Turkey. Ankara demands that this spelling be used in the world – it is closer to the original name of the country in Turkish.
