In Thessaloniki, a MAT fighter threw a stun grenade at a student (video)

A member of the ΜΑΤ Special Forces Police Force threw a stun grenade at a student who was taking part in a protest near the Aristotle University in Thessaloniki.

For more than a month university students actively protest against the introduction of police protection on the territory of universities.

During another protest on Thursday, a police officer threw a stun grenade at a student protester, causing an ear injury and jaw injury.

The 20-year-old injured student was taken to a nearby hospital where he underwent examinations, including a hearing test and a CT scan, as well as other tests. He was discharged early in the evening with antibiotics prescribed.

In the photo: A student at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki lies on the ground, bleeding from their ear. The young man was wounded by a stun grenade thrown directly at him by a soldier of the MAT (special unit of the Greek police, whose tasks are to suppress riots and disperse demonstrations). The wounded young man is surrounded by classmates who are waiting for an ambulance.

However, according to local lawyerthe student also suffered a facial injury from being kicked by a police officer and temporarily lost his hearing due to a grenade that landed near his right ear, as well as problems with his jaw.

In a statement Greek policefor their part, blamed the students for the violence, stating that “one civilian and one police officer were injured after 120 students attacked riot police.

An attack by armed security officials using exploding ammunition against unarmed students drew sharp criticism from opposition parties such as the left-wing SYRIZA and the socialist PASOK. Social media users are wondering if the conservative government wants some students dead.

A few hours later, students again began to gather in Thessaloniki to protest the attack. This is not the first similar incidentthat occurred during protests in Thessaloniki. On May 10, another student was beaten and wounded.

An impartial video captured a bloodied student being dragged by law enforcement officers, and he screams in pain: “I’m in pain, I can’t breathe!”

On May 11, a plenary session of the State Council (Supreme Constitutional Court) of Greece ruled that the university police, which also consists of special guards, do not violate the principles of academic freedom and full self-government of higher education institutions.

The State Council decided that the presence of the police in universities is constitutional

According to the announcement, it was unanimously agreed that “no provision of Law 4777/2021 indicates that individual freedoms are under threat.” Plenum substantiated it is a “public interest” decision.
