The reaction of the inhabitants of the island of Zakynthos was very violent after they installed a lifeguard tower right in front of the famous ship “Panagiotis” on Navagio beach.
The wooden structure was erected in front of a well-known tourist attraction without the municipality’s consultation with the committee set up to manage Shipwreck Cove.
“These are illegal actions of the municipality. There were no consultations with the chairman of the committee. The municipality had to accept our opinion on where the lifeguard tower should be placed,” Nikos Tsipiras characteristically stated in an IONIAN newsletter.
At the same time, ΟΑΣΠ President Efthymios Lekkas did not hide his disappointment when he heard the news that the shipwreck committee decided to allocate 2,700,000 euros for research and projects related to the maintenance of the Panagiotis ship and the erection of a fence at the top and bottom of the famous “Shipwreck” beach on Zakynthos.
“I am surprised that studies and projects are ordered without our knowledge. I inform you that no matter what projects are made, no matter how much research is carried out based on the developing processes of the climate crisis, they will be declared invalid.
I’ve been doing “Shipwreck” for 8 years now. And the fact is that research is entrusted to inexperienced people. I’m so sorry!” said Mr. Lekkas.
