For the first time, the UN notes, the number of refugees worldwide has exceeded 100 million people.
Armed conflicts and wars, violence, violation of human rights contributed to this unprecedented increase in the number of displaced persons.
The data were released by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on May 23 in Geneva. The organization notes that the Russian war in Ukraine and other armed conflicts made the most significant contribution to the development of the situation. Filippo Grandi, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, speaks of the unease this figure raises:
“This should be a wake up call to resolve and prevent destructive conflicts, end persecution and address the root causes that drive innocent people to flee.”
The latest figures from UNHCR show that the number of forcibly displaced people in the world has increased to 90 million by the end of 2021. This was due to new waves of violence or protracted conflicts in countries such as Ethiopia, Myanmar, Burkina Faso, Afghanistan, Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The war that broke out in Ukraine in February of this year led to the displacement of 8 million people within this country, more than 6 million refugees who left Ukraine were registered, writes D.W.
Meanwhile, Grandi notes, the international response to people’s need to flee the war in Ukraine “has been overwhelmingly positive.” Compassion lives in people, and to overcome crises around the world it is necessary, summed up the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
