An underwater tunnel that will change Western Attica: Perama Salamina in 5 minutes

A large-scale project that will relieve Perama and its surroundings, as well as modernize the island of Salamina itself, is in the process of being implemented.

The image of Western Attica will be completely renewed as soon as the construction of the underwater tunnel of Salamina-Perama is completed. It is assumed that the second stage of the tender will be completed during the current year, and the concession agreement will be signed before the end of 2023.

The commissioning of the facility will take place over the next 4 years. The planned budget is 500 million euros. The contractor’s income will come from collecting tolls through the tunnel.

What does the project include

The main project concerns the construction of an underwater tunnel with two traffic lanes in each direction and a length of about 400 meters (total length of about 1.1 km with entry from both sides) from the entrance in Perama to the exit in Salamina. It also provides for the construction of bypass sections of the roads of the cities of Perama and Salamina.

In particular, the new road will start near the existing Skistos-Skaramagkas avenue (near the naval base) and will continue to the Perama basin area, opposite the ferry crossing, where a junction will be created to connect it to the road network. From this point on, the road will gradually sink into the sea, representing an underwater tunnel.

Once construction is completed, the Perama-Salamina journey will be reduced to 5 minutes, while currently the same process takes 30 minutes, using ferries plying the route.

On the one hand, this will relieve Perama and its wider area, and on the other hand, it will improve the island of Salamina itself, since it will be offered easy access every day.
