A 62-year-old resident of Volos, succumbing to the temptation to “get rich for free”, announced the birth of his grandson to the registry office 11 days later in order to receive an allowance of 2,000 euros.
According to local website magnesianews.gr, the man returned the money and was sentenced to 45 days in jail with a suspended sentence by a three-member Volos Court of Misdemeanors.
According to the indictment, the man’s daughter-in-law gave birth to his grandson on December 23, 2019, and on January 2, 2020, the defendant filed a false birth certificate with the Volos registry office in order to receive a government-imposed allowance of 2,000 euros.
A false statement was found in the Volossky registry office. The man was accused of filing a false application and illegally obtaining a false certificate.
As a result, the fraudster who received the allowance had to return it, while the court considered his sincere repentance as a mitigating circumstance.
The defendant said that he faced financial problems, while having a past burdened with criminal records.
As a result, the Greek was sentenced to 45 days of probation.
