Scientists from the University of Utah in the United States revived the nerve cells of a deceased organ donor that perceive light, writes in.gr. Researchers have found that light-sensitive cells in the retina of a deceased person can respond to light for up to five hours after death. In addition, they can exchange signals with each other both during life and after death.

These nerve cells in the retina are part of the central nervous system (CNS). It includes the human brain and spinal cord.

In order to revive the eyes of a deceased organ donor, scientists restored the supply of oxygen and other nutrients to the eyes 20 minutes after removal from the donor.

“We were able to revive light-sensitive cells in the macula of the human retina, which is responsible for visual acuity. These cells, even 5 hours after the death of a person, still reacted to bright and even dim light. Now we are wondering: is brain death really the end?

According to experts, the discovery may contribute to the development of new treatments for vision loss.
