Hundreds of children died in Ukraine due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, UNICEF reports – 100 child deaths were recorded in April alone.
More children have been injured, Omar Abdi, Deputy Executive Director of UNICEF, told the UN Security Council March 12:
“In the last month alone, the UN has confirmed that about 100 children have been killed, and we believe the actual numbers are much higher. … More children have been injured and faced serious violations of their rights, millions have been displaced. The war in Ukraine is like and all wars are a crisis of child protection and children’s rights.”

Abdi said that Ukrainian schools are being shelled and used for military purposes:
“As of last week, at least 15 of the 89 UNICEF-supported schools in eastern Ukraine have been damaged or destroyed since the start of the war. Hundreds of schools across the country have been hit by heavy artillery, airstrikes and other explosive weapons in communities.”
The number of victims among children from careless handling of ammunition is also growing. On May 8, in the Dnepropetrovsk region, a 12-year-old boy died due to a Russian shell and became the sixth in the terrible list only in this region.
