Pyongyang acknowledges outbreak of coronavirus in the country

In just one day, more than 18 thousand cases of coronavirus were detected in the DPRK. This happened the day after Pyongyang reported the first infected COVID-19.

Since late April, North Korea has been dealing with a “fever of unknown origin” that has been rapidly spreading across the country. The day after Pyongyang recognized the outbreak of coronavirus in a closed country, today the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported:

“On May 12 alone, about 18,000 cases of fever were reported across the country, and currently up to 187,800 people are isolated and treated.”

In addition, six people have died from the disease. The leader of the country announced the transition to an anti-virus system of “maximum danger”. Kim Jong-un acknowledged, however, that the quarantine system in place has loopholes.

Since the end of April, “fever of unknown origin” has rapidly spread throughout the country, resulting in 350,000 cases in a short period of time. More than 160 thousand people have recovered. WHO has begun shipping COVID medicine to North Korea.

Until May 12, the DPRK denied the circulation of the coronavirus, and also stated that there were no patients in the country.
