President Katerina Sakellaropoulou called Greece “a pillar of stability in the Southeast Mediterranean and the region as a whole”, while assuring the country’s commitment to dialogue with Turkey.
“Neighbors need each other,” she added. Stressing that Greece is well equipped to protect its national sovereignty from external threats, Sakellaropoulou reaffirmed that the country “wants dialogue” with Turkey.
Hulusi Akar says Greece is to blame for its problems
Earlier on Tuesday, Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said Turkey was “a million times right in its problems with Greece, which continues its provocative actions and provocative rhetoric.”
Referring to territorial disputes with Athens, he said in an interview with the Turkish newspaper Milliyet that there is no other country in the world with 6 miles of territorial water and 10 miles of airspace. He also added that 16 islands were militarized despite the Treaty of Lausanne. Turkey wants dialogue, he said, stressing that he will not allow violations of his rights.
Irritated by the Greek programs to acquire new weapons, Akar said that this program imposes a heavy financial burden and “harms the Greek people.” If these programs are focused on Turkey, he stressed, they are not enough. If they are for defense, then there are too many of them.
