Portugal: scandal with the transfer of data of Ukrainian refugees to Russia

The Portuguese police are investigating the transfer of information about Ukrainian refugees to the Russian Federation.

As reported today “EUROPEAN TRUTH”referring to Reuters, Portuguese law enforcement officers raided the municipal refugee support center. The reason is the transfer of personal data of refugees from Ukraine to the Russian Federation.

The police statement said that a search was carried out at the Support Center, the building of the municipality of Setubal and the Association of Migrants from Eastern Europe “Unity”, of which the Russian spouses are members. The police seized the documents.

The scandal began with the publication of Expresso on April 29. It alleged that Igor Khashin and his wife Yulia, a Russian spouse with dual citizenship, made photocopies of the refugees’ personal documents and interrogated them about the whereabouts of family members in Ukraine.

The newspaper reports that the Portuguese security service has been closely monitoring the activities of the Hashin spouses since 2014, since the annexation of Crimea. It is noted that the city authorities of Setubal, where the Communist Party of Portugal has the majority, helped the “cooperation” of the spouses with the refugee center.

Following the release of the information, opposition parties called for the resignation of André Martins, the mayor of Setúbal, who they said was aware of the couple’s ties to the Russian state. Subsequently, the government said that this case “needs to be investigated to the very end”, and the government “will not allow those who come here … not to be treated with dignity and respect.”

Portugal has received approximately 36,000 Ukrainian refugees to date. At the same time, she was already accused of transferring confidential data. This year, for example, the Lisbon city hall was fined 1.2 million euros for handing over personal data of Russian protesters to the Russian embassy.
