In an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine, the foreign minister EU Josep Borrell criticizes the fact that opponents of arms supplies to Ukraine do not care how the war ends. He calls on Europe to be less naive in foreign policy.
In conversation with reporters FAZ he stated that he “doesn’t understand people who see arms supplies as an extension of the war”:
“I ask these people: does it matter how this war ends? Should the Ukrainians kneel, torn to pieces by the Russians? Is that what you want?”
Borrell said, actually confirming his previous thesis, that the European Union is not going to be a mediator in negotiations with Russia:
“You see, wars end with negotiations. But one must sit down at the negotiating table from a position of strength, and the task now is to put the Ukrainians in this position. This war must be won on the battlefield.”
According to the head of the foreign policy department, it is necessary to continue “the weakening of the Russian economy and its international isolation.”
Regarding the mediation mission of the European Union, Borrell noted that “the Russians will not accept this, just as we will not accept Russia as a mediator.”
He also excludes that China will play this role, as it leans towards the Russian side. Listing possible mediators to resolve the conflict, Borrell said:
“Turkey is doing a very good job there. It has good relations with both sides. Of course, the United Nations would be better.”
The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, spoke out for the supply of weapons to Ukraine, the continuation of the war and against negotiations with Russia.
