Earthquake in Arkalochori: famous seismologist calls for calm

This Sunday morning, Crete shuddered again from tangible tremors, the intensity of which was 4.5 on the Richter scale.

According to the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens, the intensity of seismic shaking was initially estimated at 4.3 points, but then it was revised and fixed at a higher level – 4.5 points on the Richter scale. The epicenter of the tremors was located five kilometers east/northeast of Arkalohori, and the depth of the focus was 13.8 km.

Famous seismologist Efthymios Lekkas said that the epicenter of today’s earthquake coincides with the epicenter 6-point September (September 27, 2021) when buildings were damaged and one person died. However, he assured that there is no need to worry about today’s seismic activity.

In September, in Arkalochori, a man who fell from the roof of a church during an earthquake and was then covered in rocks that fell on him died. The rescuers who arrived at the scene began to free him from the rubble, but, unfortunately, he was already dead.

Speaking to newsit.gr, Lekkas warned that the seismic sequence could continue with new aftershocks, but this should not be a concern for citizens. newsbreak.gr.
