Many media outlets claim that Russian President Vladimir Putin is going to shock the world at the May 9th parade and send the West a doomsday warning.
This is reported, for example, by the agency Reutersnoting that the head of the Russian Federation will speak on “Red Square before the parade of troops, tanks, missiles and intercontinental ballistic missiles.”
The Victory Day parade will feature supersonic fighter jets, Tu-160 strategic bombers and, for the first time since 2010, a doomsday Il-80 command aircraft that can carry Russia’s top leadership in the event of a nuclear war, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense. . During the onset of “hour X” IL-80 is able to become a mobile command center of the president. It is supposed to be packed with technology, but the exact details are a state secret.
The less time left before May 9, the more rumors and speculation are circulating about Putin’s alleged special statement on Ukraine. Options include a direct declaration of war or national mobilization. Dmitry Peskov, Kremlin spokesman, commented on the rumors briefly: “Nonsense.”
At the same time, the Kremlin did not respond to a request for comment on what the Russian president might announce in his speech, which he will proclaim from the podium on Red Square. Last year, for example, Putin chided Western exceptionalism and, in his words, the rise of “neo-Nazism and Russophobia,” trends he returns to time and time again when speaking of Ukraine.
Meanwhile, according to the agency, the US Embassy in Russia recommended to its citizens abstain from attending mass events in the capital on the occasion of Victory Day. Residents of Latvia were also advised to refuse to visit war memorials on May 9, and the Latvian Seimas urgently declared this date a day of remembrance for those killed in Ukraine.
