Greek tennis player Stefanos Tsitsipas negatively assessed the removal of the Russians from participating in Wimbledon 2022. The athlete considered that the Russian tennis players did nothing to be suspended from the tournament. He called the decision of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club bad.
“Players cannot control what happens. Especially the players of those countries that have suffered the most. This is a sensitive issue. It’s not good that they weren’t allowed to play. They did nothing wrong that would lead to an automatic disqualification from the tournament, ”Stefanos Tsitsipas quotes the publication. Greek City Times.
Earlier, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and others spoke out against the suspension. On the removal of Russians and Belarusians from participation in Wimbledon became known 20 April. At the same time, the Association of Tennis Professionals condemned the organizers.
Stefanos Tsitsipas has Russian roots. His mother, Yulia Salnikova, was the USSR tennis champion. She married the Greek Apostle Tsitsipas and moved to Greece. Stefanos speaks Russian and respects his mother’s homeland.
Wimbledon will take place from June 27 to July 10, 2022. On April 20, the organizers of the tournament announced that they were refusing Russian and Belarusian tennis players to participate in the competition because of the situation in Ukraine.
