Public transport in Athens will be halted on Sunday due to a labor strike on May 1st. In addition to buses, trolleybuses, trams and metros, the strike will affect ferries, ships and trains throughout the country.
Ships and ferries will remain in ports across Greece on Sunday, May 1, 2022, due to a 24-hour strike, the Panhellenic Federation of Sailors (PNO) announced on Tuesday.
In an updated statement on Friday, the transport unions said the Athens metro and tram won’t work on Labor Day. STASY employees said they would mark May 1 with a 24-hour strike in honor of the “pioneer fighters of the working class.”
Labor Day on May 1, which falls on a Sunday this year, will be celebrated on Monday (May 2) as a national holiday. STASY employees said that on Monday, trams in Athens will operate according to the Sunday schedule.
Buses and trolleybuses will work from 09:00 to 21:00 on Sunday, as unions OASA and IPAP will join the 24-hour strike called by the private sector union GSEE. Buses are expected to stop working as early as 20:00.
National Federation railroad workers also called for a 24-hour strike on Sunday. An updated timetable compiled by TrainOSE managers has been posted for the intercity trains that will run, showing their start times, including connections to buses. Travelers with canceled May 1 train or bus tickets can use the same ticket to travel on the same train or bus. Those wishing for other changes or cancellations should go to the ticket office before travelling.
