Easter bullets riddled car with children

Five minutes before the tragedy happened in Eretria. A certain car owner went shopping with children. Upon arrival, he got out of the car to the store, and when he returned, he found his vehicle literally riddled with “Easter” bullets. And this despite the fact that there were children in the cabin!

According to dikaiologitika.gr, a resident of Eretria is shocked when he discovers the hood of a car with holes left by bullets fired during the Easter celebrations. Channel ANT1 reports that bullets were fired from a firearm at an Easter party.

Something similar happened to a taxi driver on the route Athens – Corinth. The stray bullet hit the passenger seat, where, fortunately, there was no passenger at the time.

The wild custom of firing into the air “for joy” (usually at Easter) is still common among the inhabitants of Greece. The origins of the tradition are rooted in the distant past. Nevertheless, there have already been precedents when a stray bullet in one case wounded, and in the second killed a child.

An example is the tragedy of Alexia (2019), wounded on Easter. As Athens News wrote about this, a trial took place in Greece in the case of 8-year-old Alexia was injured by a stray bullet on Easter 2019, when the girl was in the courtyard of her house in Thebes. After the injury, the baby was diagnosed with 95% disability.

Alexia’s father told the TV channel OPEN about the difficulties faced by a little girl, now confined to a wheelchair for life. “We have been pulling this Calvary for 1.5 years. The accused demands negotiations. He does not want to appear in court, ”said the father of little Alexia on OPEN TV and described the daily life of the family: “Our girl is now confined to a wheelchair. She lost her entire childhood. Alexia has already undergone six surgeries. We went to a rehabilitation center in Chalkida, then abroad to a special rehabilitation center in Hamburg, but returned from there a month early due to the coronavirus.” In conclusion, Alexia’s father said: “I want justice to prevail.”

How the girl was injured

The child was walking in the street when at about 4:00 p.m. she was hit in the occipito-cervical region by a bullet fired into the air during the Easter festivities. The suspect, a 54-year-old man who was in the area on the day of the incident, admitted to firing a pistol into the air.

According to the security service, the owner of the gas station came from Athens to the village of Leontari to his friend’s house to spend the Easter weekend. During the celebration, the man pulled out a pistol and, in joy, began to shoot into the air. The house where the shooting took place is located 300-350 meters from the place where a stray bullet seriously wounded a little girl. The police searched three houses in the village of Leontari because shots were fired from there. During interrogation, shell casings were found in one of the houses, and thus the suspect was identified.

The man told journalists of the EPT1 TV channel that on that day he fired a revolver three times into the air. “A few hours later, when I learned about the girl’s injury, I hid the revolver. I was afraid that the wound that the child received was caused by a shot from my weapon. My conscience tormented me. I thought that the next day, when I got back to Athens, I would go to the police and hand over the revolver.”
