Every year on the eve of Orthodox Easter in Jerusalem, the miracle of the descent of the Holy Fire takes place. How will the service dedicated to this event go in 2022?
Tens of thousands of pilgrims come to Jerusalem to witness the miracle of the descent of the Holy Fire. And millions more people around the world follow the video broadcast of the service on TV or online. Residents of Greece traditionally gather in churches to light lamps from the Holy Fire and bring it to their homes, writes dikaiologitika.gr.
On Saturday, after the morning service, preparations for the celebration of Easter begin in the temple. Greek housewives begin to cook magiritsa – a soup of offal (usually lamb), beautifully set the table, preparing for the evening Easter liturgy in the temple.
By 11 p.m. and until midnight, believing Greeks gather at temples, holding special Easter candles in their hands – lamps. Exactly at 00:00, the clergy announce the Resurrection of Christ and light a fire from the Blessed One, brought to Greece from Jerusalem.
This year, Άγιο Φως will traditionally be delivered to the Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos”. Arrival is expected on Holy Saturday (April 23) at 18:00. From here it will be distributed to all corners of Greece.
Deputy Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Andreas Katsaniotis will visit Jerusalem on Good Friday, and the next day will receive the Holy Fire from His Beatitude Patriarch Theophilus III of Jerusalem, the Greek Foreign Ministry said in an official statement.
