Greek authorities will ban access to forests and forest parks when the risk of fire is highest

The Ministry of Climate Crises and Civil Protection has submitted an amendment to Parliament that prohibits people and vehicles from entering forest ecosystems, parks and forest areas on days when the risk of forest fires is high.

According to the amendment, the decision to ban even transit, stopping and general traffic in these areas will be taken by the leadership of each region. Not a single measure in the country is without penalties – each violation will be punished by a fine of 300 euros, the amendment says. The vote on it took place on Tuesday.

It is worth noting that earlier such decisions were made on the basis of existing laws on the police and fire protection. Apparently, the authorities decided to introduce additional fines in order to save the population from the desire to walk in the forests during the fire season.

It is also worth noting that despite the anomalously cool spring of 2022, in Greece for 1 month, from mid-March to mid-April, 10 forest fires3 of which were large.
