April’s Full Moon, dubbed the Pink Full Moon, will light up the sky this Saturday night.
Of course, it will not be “pink” in the literal sense. The origin of the name of this astronomical phenomenon goes far into the past. The Native Americans called the full moon in April the “pink moon” because the pink-flowered plants (Phlox subulata), one of the first heralds of the coming spring, were in bloom during this time period. In addition, in Japan, cherry blossoms bloom during this period of time.
The moon will look a little bigger and brighter than usual, but it certainly won’t be pink. The full moon will be observed until the morning of Monday, April 18. According to NASA, the peak of the astronomical phenomenon will come on Saturday at 21:55.
The Pink Moon also coincides with many religious holidays. In the Christian church calendar, it is called the “Easter Moon”. For Hindus, the phenomenon marks the glorification of the deity, writes cnn.gr.
The next full moons this year are: May 16, June 14, July 13, August 11, September 10, October 9, November 8 and December 7.
