Mariupol: breakthrough or captivity

Today, the office of the President of Ukraine reported that the Marines of the 36th Brigade had broken through the cordon. At the same time, the Russian Defense Ministry reports that the Marines have surrendered.

Aleksey Arestovich, adviser to the head of the presidential office, writes “Ukrainian Truth”, reported that units of the 36th Separate Marine Brigade named after Rear Admiral Belinsky broke through to join the Azov regiment. The nuances of the special operation to get out of the cordon and unite with the Azov regiment were originally told by one of the officers of the brigade, who reported on its success, despite all the difficulties.

The adviser to the head of the office of the President of Ukraine today confirmed that in Mariupol, units of the 36th brigade, as a result of a complex and very risky maneuver, broke through to connect with Azov, which competently and professionally ensured the successful actions of the marines. However, Arestovich did not indicate data on possible losses:

“Azov” received significant reinforcements. The 36th brigade avoided defeat and acquired additional serious capabilities, in fact, received a second chance. The defenders of the city have now jointly seriously strengthened their defense area. In general, the defense system of the city (Mariupol) has grown and strengthened.”

According to the publication “Novinarnya” some of the marines were captured, there are those whose fate remains unclear.

On the evening of April 12, Russian media reported that there were wounded among the Ukrainian military of the 36th brigade in Mariupol. On April 13, the Russian Ministry of Defense stated, writes “News”that part of the military personnel of the 36th Marine Brigade “voluntarily laid down their arms and surrendered.”

Major General Igor Konashenkov, a spokesman for the Russian Defense Ministry, told reporters that 1,026 Ukrainian soldiers from the 36th Marine Brigade had surrendered:

“In the city of Mariupol, in the area of ​​the metallurgical plant named after Ilyich, as a result of successful offensive actions of the Russian Armed Forces and police units of the Donetsk People’s Republic, 1,026 Ukrainian servicemen of the 36th Marine Brigade voluntarily laid down their arms and surrendered.”

According to him, among those who surrendered – 47 female soldiers and 151 people were injured. They received medical assistance, and then the prisoners were taken to the Mariupol city hospital.

On April 12, Mikhail Podolyak, adviser to the head of the Presidential Office, said that the president and the leadership of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were looking for an opportunity to help Ukrainian soldiers in Mariupol, but they could not voice their plans publicly.
