Accelerated natural gas exploration plan in six regions of Greece

The Prime Minister of Greece announced the upgrade of hydrocarbon exploration projects to projects of national importance after a meeting at the office of the Hellenic Hydrocarbon Management Company with the participation of ELPE management. Goals were also set to clarify the picture of the existence of possible natural gas deposits in Greece by the end of 2023.

According to Kyriakos Mitsotakis, exploration of natural resources will be carried out in six areas in the Epirus region and five others in the sea areas of the Ionian Sea, the Gulf of Kyparissia and Crete. dikaiologitika.gr.

The Prime Minister noted that before the situation in Ukraine, this was not a priority due to low prices for gas supplied to Greece. However, now the picture has changed.

The exploration will be “managed” by two Greek companies, which commit to start an exploration program by the end of 2023. “By this time, we should know if we have exploitable natural gas volumes so that we can continue to develop it,” the prime minister said.

These companies will focus on the main potential gas production targets: “In some areas, we may be able to drill exploration wells before the end of 2023.”

As Kyriakos Mitsotakis emphasized, the statements being made today are part of strengthening the strategic and economic position of the country. “In addition to being a gas storage country, Greece can also become a producer country,” the statement said.
