According to the publication lifo.gr, a local resident was arrested on Saturday afternoon in the area of ​​the municipality of Agios Nikolaos by officers of the Neapolis Police Department, on charges of violating pet laws and illegal handling of weapons. According to the police investigation, the detainee fired at the cat with an air gun, injuring the animal.

During a search, an “air” was found and confiscated from the accused. The detainee was fined 30,000 euros, a preliminary investigation is being conducted by the Neapolis Police Department. The arrested person will be taken to the Lasithi prosecutor’s office.

Recall that a year ago in Greece, the provisions of the law on animals were tightened. The main goal of which is to improve the living conditions of pets, as well as to protect the homeless and abandoned.

The new law was presented to the government by Deputy Interior Minister Stelios Petsas in the context of the government’s electoral pledge: “Not a single homeless animal thrown into the street. “Not!” cruelty to animals.”

The goal of the project is to create an institutional framework for the protection of domestic and homeless animals, adapted to modern conditions and opportunities. The presented project aims to improve the living conditions of pets and protect homeless animals through the cooperation of the state, local governments, scientists and animal welfare organizations.

According to the bill, associations and organizations for the protection of animals, veterinarians, breeders, shelters and the state administration will for the first time become part of a single official platform for mutual cooperation.

At the level of municipalities, a comprehensive program for the supervision of homeless animals has been developed. The provisions of the new law also include a list of actions on the part of justice in relation to persons seen in cruelty to animals. Fines are being introduced and increased, as well as the list of categories of offenses against animals has been expanded and the punishment for those responsible has been tightened.

“Five Freedoms of Animals”

The 5 internationally recognized “animal freedoms” are now also included in the law:

• The right to satisfy hunger and thirstfreedom from hunger and thirst).
• The right to be free from pain, disease and injury (withfreedom from injury or illness).
• The right not to be subjected to severe stress and not to experience fear (withfreedom from grief and suffering).
• The right to comfortfreedom from discomfort).
• The right to live in conditions as close to natural as possible (freedom to carry out species-typical behavior).

In Greece, a national registry is being created, which will include all information related to pets and stray animals kept in shelters, as well as information about associations and organizations for the protection of animals, veterinarians, breeders, etc.

Electronic passport and digital medical history of the animal

Pets will receive a digital health record through the National Pet Registry. Breeders involved in breeding animals will be taken under control. Issues related to the maximum number of offspring per animal, the license to reproduce, etc. will be regulated.

The list of illegal actions committed against animals has been expanded, fines have been introduced for new offenses and existing ones have been tightened for serious misconduct. Support and incentives are provided for citizens who own pets: for example, reducing municipal fees to 10% for conscientious citizens.

Supervision systema: A consistent supervision system has been established with the participation of representatives from KEDE, the Ombudsman and animal protection organizations.

National Complaint Line: development of a digital application and a 5-digit emergency number to report cases of animal cruelty and any violations of the legal framework for the protection of pets.
