The Pentagon determined who released "Point-U" in Kramatorsk

A senior US Department of Defense official at a closed briefing for journalists said that a missile attack from the Tochka U complex on the railway station in Kramatorsk, Donetsk region, was carried out by the Russian military. The Pentagon said:

“Obviously, we did not buy into the Russians’ objection that they were not responsible for this missile strike. At first they claimed a successful strike, but then they denied it as soon as the consequences were reported.

Russian publics reported on the “strike on the Armed Forces of Ukraine”, and then promptly edited the posts. After the attack on the railway station, a number of Russian Telegram channels were quick to report that the Ukrainian military and equipment were the target of the shelling. A little later, the messages were edited, and the strikes in Kramatorsk were called a “provocation.” As an example, the Siloviki Telegram channel, which has more than four hundred thousand subscribers, writes “Radio Liberty”. The message said:

“Ten minutes ago, arrivals at the Kramatorsk railway station. They work on the accumulation of militants of the Armed Forces of Ukraine”.

Thanks to the TGStat analytics service, which is able to save the original version of messages, the publication reports, reposts with such text can still be seen on the network.

Parallels with the downed Boeing MH17 in 2014 are drawn by Denis Kazansky, a journalist, a former representative of Ukraine in the Trilateral Contact Group for a peaceful settlement of the situation in eastern Ukraine. He recalls how then there were reports that a Ukrainian plane had been shot down, and then they were hastily deleted and edited:

“As always, immediately after the attack on the Kramatorsk railway station, the Russians boasted of this“ feat ”in social networks. They believed that they were in our military. As soon as it became known that the strike was not on the Armed Forces of Ukraine, but on civilians, the posts immediately began to be rubbed and removed.”

The Pentagon also shared information that for the attack on Kramatorsk, which is now controlled by Ukraine, the Russian military is going to use the 18th motorized rifle division of the Russian Armed Forces:

“We can talk about one unit – the 18th motorized rifle division, which was formed in 2021. It consists of three motorized infantry regiments, as well as an armored regiment. According to our assessment, they are expected to be used where the railway station was attacked (in Kramatorsk). We see the movement of units and the use of force in this zone. This is the main railway junction of the eastern part of Ukraine. And it’s a very strategic place. And we saw how they tried to move forces to Kramatorsk, where this railway station is located.”

On April 8, cluster shells were launched from the Tochka-U complex, which fell in the area station Kramatorskcrowded with wishing evacuate people, mostly mothers with children. President Volodymyr Zelensky called on the world to respond harshly to what happened.

As of yesterday, 52 dead are known, including 5 children. There are 80 people wounded during the shelling of Kramatorsk in the hospitals of the Dnepropetrovsk region. Some people are in a very critical condition. Also in hospitals in the region are 19 children affected by the explosion, the newspaper reports. “The country”referring to the head of the regional council Nikolai Lukashuk.

The Kremlin says Russia has nothing to do with it. Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov, according to the Russian edition of Interfax, said on Friday:

“Here you need to focus, first of all, on the statement of the Ministry of Defense, excluding the use of this missile (Tochka-U) by our Armed Forces. Our Armed Forces do not use this type of missiles. There were no combat missions (for the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation) in Kramatorsk and were not planned today.”

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation said that Russia did not launch a missile attack on Kramatorsk, and the DPR called the shelling a provocation. As writes RIA Newsan analysis of the radius of destruction of the warhead and the position of the body of the tail of the Tochka-U missile confirm that it was launched by the Armed Forces of Ukraine from the south-western direction from Kramatorsk, said the official representative of the Russian Ministry of Defense, Major General Igor Konashenkov. The Russian military department claimsthat Tochka-U missiles are used only by the Ukrainian armed forces.

However air force notes that there is evidence that the Tochka-U missile could remain in service in Russia. On March 6, the Conflict Intelligence investigative team claimed that the missile continues to be in service with the Russian army – despite the fact that most of the missiles have been replaced by more modern Iskanders. In a war, however, the Air Force cannot quickly confirm information about the weapons of the warring parties.
